On 13 October 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson under went gall bladder surgery, an operation intensely reported on by the press. Bill Moyers, the White House Press Secretary held press conferences to keep journalists informed about the President's health status. ITN's Peter Woods reported on an operation that attracted media attention worldwide, with various members of White House staff setting up phone systems and telex machines to update those who needed to know about the President's progress during surgery, including American troops in Vietnam. Vice President Hubert Humphery took on the POTUS role for the 3 hours Johnson was unconscious.
