In April 1975, violence between Lebanon’s Christian and Muslim communities erupted into a multi‑factional civil war, rooted in long-standing political divisions and the proliferation of sectarian militias, and complicated by the presence of armed Palestinian groups operating inside Lebanon.
By 1976, the conflict had escalated into widespread urban warfare and sieges, drawing in regional powers as Syrian forces intervened with the stated aim of restoring order and limiting the conflict’s spread. As the conflict wore on and alliances shifted, Lebanon’s state institutions broke down, leaving civilians increasingly exposed to displacement, shortages, and communal violence.
