This Lunar New Year is the year of the majestic Tiger, so we thought it was only fitting to shine a light on Tigers and what we can do to support them through the choices we make 🏮🐯
There are estimated to be fewer than 400 Sumatran Tigers remaining in the wild. Here at Taronga, we care for six Sumatran Tigers, representing 1.5% of the world’s total wild population Sumatran Tigers, which, if you come to think of it is an absolutely heartbreaking figure.
Habitat loss is one of the key threats impacting Sumatran Tigers. Rainforests around the world have experienced devastating losses, being cleared to make way for ever-expanding unsustainable oil palm plantations. These plantations are the leading cause of habitat destruction for the Sumatran Tiger and several other native species.
Palm oil is found in roughly half the packaged products sold in supermarkets including favourite snack foods like ice cream, cookies, crackers, chocolate products, cereals, doughnuts and potato chips. Palm oil is likely present in some form in nearly every room of your home. But there is a solution! There is a thing are 100% sustainable palm oil, so make sure when you do your next grocery shop you look out for the brands that are using sustainable palm oil!
