Luftwaffe Airfield Audembert was the closest airfield to England, and therefore the most important German fighter airfield during the Battle of Britain (1940). It was used by Jagdgeschwader 26 “Schlageter” of Adolf Galland. In 1941 Reichsmarschall Göring visited the unit.
Aerodrome Audembert had two runways. There were three squadrons based with a total of 36 Me 109 fighters. The aerodrome consisted of two parts: Verteitigungsunterkunft 177 (Paladin) and 174 (Tillburg). Today only the remains of the hangars (Splitterschutzbox) can still be found.
The Luftwaffe continued to use the airfield until the Normandy invasion in 1944.
