- An Alternative Gift Christmas - For those who really need some assistance - Love is not what you say . . . . But what you do. -- For the Brethren, it's why many are involved annually, in Brethren Disaster Ministries and Children's Disaster Services. As in past years, "Brethren Voices" has featured, "Alternative Gift Giving Suggestions," for the individuals, on your Christmas list, who already have all the "stuff" they need. Brethren Voices Host Brent Carlson recommends a financial gift to Brethren Disaster Ministries to help families rebuild following disasters. This Christmas program shares the good works of Brethren Disaster Ministries and its' rebuild program of assisting survivors following devastating disasters. Childrens Disaster Services provides child care, allowing parents to respond to the pressing issues of the days following a disaster.
Due to the pandemic, Brethren Disaster Ministries was forced to curtail some of its activities, but recently the Coastal North Carolina re-build site was reopened as a group of volunteers arrived the first part of November, with work scheduled through April 2022. Families who were devastated by Hurricane Florence in 2018, will still be assisted with home rebuilding.
Since 1980, Children's Disaster Services has been meeting the needs of children by setting up child care centers in shelters and disaster assistance centers across the nation. Specially trained volunteers, trained to respond to traumatized children, provide a calm, safe and reassuring presence in the midst of chaos following devastating storms. These volunteers have served at natural or human caused disasters, in over 65 different communities across the United States.
"Higher Ground," the musical introduction of Mike Stern sets the mood for the program, encouraging viewers to see the needs of so many folks. A gift to Brethren Disaster Ministries can assist folks in their rebuilding efforts, this Christmas Season.
