It was a crowded day at Huguenot Park on Mother’s Day weekend when Officers Crocker and Sweeney heard cries for help. Three young children were drowning.
Our officers immediately jumped into action. Officer Sweeney pulled off his gear and dove into the water, rescuing a young boy. Officer Crocker stayed on shore, providing medical aid to a small boy and girl on shore. Thankfully, rescue units were nearby and arrived quickly to the beach to take the children to the hospital. All three made a full recovery.
Last month, we presented Officers Crocker and Sweeney with Lifesaving Medals, an honor we bestow on our officers.
This story wouldn’t have the happy ending it has without the quick thinking of Steve Insco, a regular at Huguenot Park. He helped rescue two of the children. We’re extremely grateful for Mr. Insco’s help. We presented him with a Certificate of Appreciation last month to thank him.
It might not be beach weather, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a risk for drowning. No matter what time of year, please be careful around the water. Rip currents and rough surf can be deadly. If you’re ever in doubt, stay out of the water.
