🔶 Please read description! 🔶 This is a manga-heavy vid, so I recommend pausing and reading the panels if you want after watching it through! 🔶 I’ve wanted to see Attack on Titan since forever and I finally dived in during the season 4 hype. I’m so happy to have finally seen this incredible masterpiece of a show. There’s such a depth in its moral landscape, a profound empathy for so many people and so many points of view, so much heroism in its vast cast of relatable characters. I love it so much, and I’ve particularly fallen for Captain Levi Ackerman (heh, like a lot of fans apparently!).

I read the No Regrets spin-off manga and had to make a video for Levi’s relationship with his original found family, Furlan and Isabel, since it highlights something I really want to show about Levi: his immense compassion and need to protect others. He picked up Isabel as a child and decided it was he who had to be her family. He saved Furlan from another gang and brought him into his home as a brother and friend.

Levi isn’t really the crime boss, either, that the No Regrets OVA makes him out to be. In the manga, he struggles with his role with his family––refusing to call them his subordinates, but commanding them to protect them. He's younger here: just a young man with a good heart in a hard life with the family he cobbled together.

The manga also clarifies what makes Commander Erwin Smith’s offer to join the Survey Corps so appealing to Levi: Erwin tells him that his strength allows him to make others feel safe in the Survey Corps. That’s the responsibility Levi seeks, the one he’s sought out for himself with his family––and in the end, he chooses to do it for the new family he creates in his squad, and for the new person he admires and comes to love. Erwin becomes Levi’s soulmate, and we see so much of their original attraction to one another in this manga. That’s why I wanted to feature the manga so much in this vid.

I also really love Furlan, all because of this manga. He has *spoiler alert* the most dignified and kind death in all of SNK. This song by my new favorite band (Smith and Thell) typifies that calmness of mind so much.
