We may have lost all three legs of the race even with us not helping Yesufu out of the trap, but we managed to win at the trials in between each leg. This puts us one behind, but we can still win overall if we prevail in the spear throwing and wrestling bridge and prevail we must.

It doesn't matter whether you win or lose the initial contest if you help Yesfu out as both of you become a simbani warrior regardless. The winner merely gets to ask something of the Laibon, something we can use to get the right to hold on to the drum of magic. If Yesufu wins, he'll ask the Laibon to give us the drum but only if we helped him. If you don't, well... just make sure you do win.

Speaking of making sure you win, Yesufu isn't very good at the wrestling bridge. Try as we might, he seems intent on throwing that final part of the contest for reasons we can only guess at.
