Before our arrival in Tarna, there was an effort to try and avert war between the Simbani and the Leopardmen. A peace mission was dispatched to try and soothe over the tensions but they were attacked in the jungle at the dead of night. Among them was Rakeesh and Kreesha's daughter and the sole person that managed to escape, Khatib.
Once a diplomat in the service of Tarna and a master of many langauges and cultures, Khatib is a broken man in body, mind and soul. The ones that attacked the peace mission - many of whom think were leopardmen - left horrific wounds upon his body, rent his mind and, if you believe him, are in the process of devouring his very soul. He is a man living in constant agony whose nightmares are full of terror and suffering. He is a man on borrowed time and while you don't have to talk to him, doing so give you some horrfying insights into what you're going to be going up against later in the adventure. It also seals his doom, but he would likely consider that a mercy.
