In this lecture, we discuss the vapour-compression refrigeration cycle. We being by discussing the modifications required to a Carnot cycle in reverse to operate a practical refrigerator. This leads us to the vapour-compression refrigeration cycle. We also discuss the various components of the vapour-compression refrigerator. Finally, we consider an example problem of calculating the heat removal rate from the refrigerated space and the COP of a vapour compression refrigerator with R-134a as the working substance. We also compare the COP of this refrigerator with that operating on the reverse Carnot cycle. (c) Supreet Singh Bahga, IIT Delhi.
