In this lecture, we continue our discussion on work. In particular, we discuss the mathematical concepts of path and point functions, and exact and inexact differentials. We show that work is a path function and differential work is an inexact differential. On the other hand, thermodynamic properties are point functions and their differentials are exact differentials. We also discuss work done in a non-equilibrium process through an example of compression of gas in a piston-cylinder arrangement. (c) Supreet Singh Bahga
