Thank you very much to the crew of this beautiful gaff rig ketch cutter, for their invitation on board, and a discussion on their lives as professional sailors. Built in 1892 as a faster fishing boat for deeper waters, the design became so successful these boats were in demand far beyond their local English shores. On board, you are literally standing on a working classic, a piece of commercial maritime history. There is inherently a strong desire to imagine the first crew of this all wood boat going about their daily lives at sea.
The condition of this vessel is superb, as you can see in this short film. Look out for it's travels along the Irish East Coast between ports and check out the website for more details. Hopefully you will catch a glimpse of Leader on the Irish Sea, or moored at one her regular ports of call mentioned in the film.
