In this video I visit the beach to have a go at capturing some abstract images of the coast. This trip was inspired by a magazine article and a call for readers to submit their coastal abstract images. I have never actually submitted any images to a magazine before, but have always wanted to. So, when Outdoor Photography magazine included this as their regular “If you only do one thing this month...” feature I thought I would give it a try.
The theme was based on an article in the magazine by Rachael Talibart who is a truly fantastic coastal photographer, and whose Instagram feed has been inspiring me for a while instagram.com/rachaeltalibart/. You should follow her!
The coast and abstracts are far from my comfort zone, but that is exactly why I wanted to give this theme a shot. I firmly believe that it isn’t until we try doing something new and challenging that we really develop and improve, not just in photography but in everything. I also really believe in pushing ourselves into taking action on those things we might have put off in the past. In this case I have previously talked myself out of submitting images to magazines or for competitions because I have told myself that I’m not good enough, but realistically speaking, what’s the worst that can happen if I do send them in? At the very worst, the absolute worst, they will not publish any of them, and that is the same position I would be in as if I hadn’t sent in any at all. Not that bad really for a worst case scenario.
Outdoor Photography magazine is publishing the images they select in the November 2017 issue - will any of my attempts at Coastal Abstracts make it into the issue?! I can’t wait to find out!
