A short video telling my story for #Mentalhealthawarenessweek

In 2014 I was signed off sick from work with stress. I had a lot of things happening in my life which contributed and triggered this episode, and a lot of advice I received at the time was "you just have to get on with things..."

I took this too literally and felt that no one wanted to hear what was going on with me so I bottled up all my thoughts and feelings and barely spoke about them, playing down any of the major stressors that were affecting me - and that for me was not at all the right thing to do.

I got worse and worse, and became depressed which affected all areas of my life until I reached a breaking point in 2016 where I just had to do something about it. My wife convinced me to go and speak to my doctor once again, and my road to recovery began.

I started to look after my own wellbeing more by going out with my camera, a hobby which was something that I had completely given up as I had started to I become unwell, and I began noticing the world around me once again.

Photography has played such a big part in my return to wellness, and I continue to use it to manage stress and anxiety. I dedicate a lot of my time now trying to spread the message of how much it has helped me and how it can help others.

Stress is called the silent killer, and there are so many people out there who may be suffering in silence. Campaigns like this do great things in raising awareness and getting people to talk about it, and that can be so important to so many people.

Take care of yourselves.

David
