Beginning at a brisk 26°F on a mid-week hike, I ventured to Lake Ann and Fortune Peak via the Esmeralda Basin Trail in the Teanaway area, finding a tranquil escape. Frost glistened on the ground and vegetation, giving the landscape an enchanting, frozen beauty, though no microspikes were needed. This time of year, solitude is a gift, as fewer hikers brave the cold, leaving the trails quiet and serene.
From Fortune Creek Pass, I took a side trip, descending to Lake Ann before climbing back up to the pass and continuing higher to Fortune Peak. Near Lake Ann, a few larches stood with their golden needles mostly shed, adding a hint of autumn color. The final ascent to Fortune Peak required only a straightforward Class 2 scramble, bringing just enough adventure without technical challenges. At the top, the wind picked up, emphasizing the elevation and exposure, while a delicate layer of ice covered Lake Ann below, signaling winter's approach and enhancing the alpine beauty. Mount Stuart loomed in the distance, shrouded in clouds, while wispy clouds rolled over the top of Fortune Peak, adding a mystical quality to the scene.
