Big Snow Mountain is a prominent 6,680-foot peak located between Hardscrabble and Gold Lakes within the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. This remote area is magical, featuring crystal-clear waterfalls with deep pools filled with native trout. In this video, we venture to Hardscrabble Lake, then gain a hidden saddle to Gold Lake before summiting Big Snow Mountain the next day. We were fortunate that Gold Lake had just melted out days before we reached it, making our adventure even more special. Scrambling and route-finding skills are required for this trek, but you’re rewarded with some of the most spectacular scenery in the Central Cascades. While this area isn’t far from Seattle, it feels worlds away—a striking example of the rugged beauty that defines the region.
