Mineral Butte is a hidden gem in the Wild Sky Wilderness, offering a rewarding trek with stunning summit views. Once a popular destination, the route saw fewer visitors after the Index-Galena Road washed out. Now that the road has reopened, it is accessible once more.
The hike begins behind a gate at an elevation of 1,121 feet. The initial stretch follows a long, overgrown logging road leading to the wilderness boundary, but it remains manageable. Snow and weather conditions determine the equipment needed to safely reach the summit.
At the top, you are rewarded with an expansive, panoramic view of the central Cascades, making the climb well worth the effort. Visible peaks include Del Campo, Gothic Peak, Sheep Gap Mountain, Red Mountain, and many more.
Mineral Butte offers a fantastic blend of adventure and scenic beauty, especially in late winter or early spring.
