Mount Rainier's Paradise Glacier has retreated so dramatically that reaching its eastern flank now means leaving a maintained trail far behind. The route begins next to the Paradise River, then past meadows filled with wildflowers and onto scoured moraine and loose talus. An unmarked scrambler's route continues to a saddle beside Cowlitz Rock and along the southern boundary of Ingram Glacier. This is rugged, loose, exposed terrain where footing shifts between rocks, ash, and hard snow. The payoff is point 7777', where the two glaciers merge and a rock cleaver ends. Standing there, you're inside the mountain's machinery— fractured icefalls loom close enough to see seracs and crevasses at work. Huge waterfalls, swelled by melting ice thunder down precarious cliffs. It's one of the most awesome viewpoints anywhere on Mt. Rainier, and one of the least visited.
