Three miles of old-growth forest leads to the edge of the world — the shattered, ice-blue face of the Coleman Glacier, cracking and groaning as it tumbles down Mount Baker's northwestern flank. You're close enough to hear it move and watch seracs the size of buildings calve away in real time.

But what you're really watching is a retreat. Coleman Glacier has pulled back well over a mile up the mountain — a slow collapse that's accelerated in recent decades. The jagged wall of ice in front of you marks where the glacier stands today; the bare, scoured rock and rubble stretching down the valley below marks where it used to be. It's a rather short climb to get here, though the creek crossings can be sketchy — but nothing prepares you for standing at the foot of a dying glacier: immense, thunderous, and running out of time.
