26 years ago, the construction of the ZKM in Karlsruhe got completed and an opening ceremony took place on October 18th, 1997. Kraftwerk took the opportunity to participate in this special event with a concert.

The venue of this concert is an atrium which is "Lichthof" in German, so, this is the origin of the unofficial name of the 3rd unreleased 1997 Kraftwerk song. They focused on speech synthesis in Lichthof. Florian was responsible for speech synthesis and he studiously studied speech synthesis in the late 80s and the 90s which indicates that Lichthof could be Florian's song.

Big changes were made with the studio equipment in 1997. The Synclavier got replaced by the Nord Lead 2, the Kawai K-5000R, the Waldorf Microwave and the Quasimidi Quasar. The Nord Lead 2 was controlled by the Quasimidi Cyber-6 keyboard.

In Computer Love, the Synclavier was heavily used during The Mix era. Computer Love was absent in the setlist from 1997 to 2005 which might have been caused by the lack of the Synclavier. Other songs like Radioaktivität and Trans Europa Express also have Synclavier sounds, but they didn't get removed from the setlist. The Synclavier sounds were simply sampled and if Computer Love was in the setlist, the sounds would have been sampled too. It was more due to length limitations that Computer Love was removed in the setlist.

The sound in this concert is far from perfect. They used a quadrophonic sound system for the first time in this concert. In Numbers, strange metallic sounds can be heard which most likely come from Ralf's mic. The snare and Ralf's voice sound a bit distant in some songs, but this was also the case in last concert where they used a stereo sound system.

Ätherwellen made its return last concert, but in a different form. It has an ambient style instead of a synth pop style. It is believed that Ralf used a vocoder on his voice, but it was actually an autotuner that was in use. In all performance in 1997 and 1998, the autotuned vocals sound the same, so, they were playback.

The main riff in Tango which mainly shapes the character of this song is produced by the Kawai K-5000R synthesizer. A formant filter is put on the main riff to give it that special sound.

A barely noticeable change during the 1997 concerts is the snare drum in Radioactivity. It still has the old snare drum from The Mix, but with another snare drum put on top of it to make it sharper and stronger.

Lichthof was played for the 2nd time, but also for the last time in this concert. The project file of Lichthof might be corrupted as it can be heard in next concert in Tokyo 1998, but the real reason for the removal of Lichthof in the setlist is unknown. Like in Nummweltverschmutzung, this song has no video projection according to a concert review of last concert, but there's a picture in a bootleg with a green grid on the projection screens which might be the video projection.

Strangely, the intro of Taschenrechner was played twice. First time it was played, Ralf played a slow version of the intro on his handheld keyboard. Then, the intro came back and Florian triggered a sample. It seems as if the handheld equipment was in a warmup phase.

This recording comes from the "Die Rückkehr Der Mensch Maschine" bootleg. It was recorded with a high quality device, but the sound is flat, weak and slightly unsharp which I fixed by equlizations. The recording device also catched unnecessary frequencies between 10kHz and 16kHz which is why I gave some songs an A-, but removing them would result in quality loss.

Although I rather work with something I already have, for the pre-show sounds, I used an alt source uploaded by Babass_ on YouTube to make the audio more complete, so, special thanks to him for uploading the alt source.
