I was surprised when I found the backing vocals in the 5.1 tracks, because they are so hidden in the original mix that they cannot be heard. Florian sings D#4s/E Flat 4s here. This is a good example of how untrained male middle-range singers sound like when they sing lower 4th-octave notes. Florian uses his head voice, his vocal cords are still closing, but lightly. A singer with enough practice would mix their chest voice in, a little bit or a lot, depending on the context. D#4/E Flat 4 is pretty close to the second passaggio/falsetto transition of a high baritone (E4) which makes it understandable why Florian sang the D#4 in Airwaves and Ralf the F4 in early '75 performances of Autobahn in head voice.
