July 22, 2026: Natalie Erdman and Kristin Rucinski -- Building a Stronger Homeless Response System: The Role of our Community's New Men's Shelter

Natalie Erdman and Kristin Rucinski of Shelter Friends of Dane County shared how Dane County is building a stronger homeless response system amid steady population growth and rising shelter use. Average Madison shelter guests have increased from about 92 in 2019 to 310 in 2025, underscoring the need for prevention, crisis response and permanent housing. A new purpose-built men’s shelter opens Sept. 1, developed by the City, County and Porchlight, with private support helping sustain operations. Designed with dignity and safety in mind, it includes smaller sleeping pods, storage, accessibility, a kitchen and onsite health services to help guests move toward permanent housing.
