Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said the European Union must take stronger action against officials who act against democratic values and international law.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, Albares said Spain has already acted unilaterally and bilaterally by imposing travel bans.
He argued that it is now time for Europe to do the same.
Albares said that when someone is a minister in a democracy, they must behave like one. They cannot make outrageous statements or act against international law while expecting a normal relationship with the European Union.
His message was direct: the EU must stand up and live up to its own values and principles.
What would be unacceptable inside European democratic governments, he said, must also be unacceptable for anyone who wants to travel to Europe.
