Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke in Quebec about the ongoing trade war with the United States, saying Canada could not accept unfair terms from Washington.
Carney said the latest U.S. initiative was not a surprise, but that it revealed something important about the negotiations.
According to Carney, Canada learned during the talks that the United States wanted terms that could seriously damage — even destroy — major Canadian industries, including the automotive, steel and aluminum sectors.
He said this was one of the main reasons Canada said no to the deal.
Carney also warned against tearing apart the North American automotive partnership, describing it as one of the most efficient and successful auto partnerships in the world — a partnership built over 60 years.
He pointed out that U.S. auto workers in states such as Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Alabama also depend on Canada, because Canada is one of the largest buyers of American vehicles.
Carney said any future agreement must be between two sovereign countries — fair, effective and focused on workers, families and the economies of both Canada and the United States.
