Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade and Minister for Defence Helen McEntee warned that Ukraine faces an urgent gap in support as Russia continues targeting civilian life and critical infrastructure.
Speaking during the press conference Q&A after the Informal Meeting of Defence Ministers in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, McEntee said the decision to bring support forward is not only for ministers at the informal meeting, but also for the European Commission and the Council.
She said Ukraine’s defence minister made clear that there is a real gap and a real need.
McEntee pointed to last winter’s extreme conditions, including temperatures of minus 35°C, and warned that 75% of Ukraine’s critical infrastructure has already been targeted.
She said Russia has a clear ambition to harm Ukraine’s civilian population by attacking the systems people rely on to survive.
McEntee said a significant number of EU Member States supported Ukraine’s request, and argued that Europe must advocate as strongly as possible to bring support forward.
Her warning was urgent: Ukraine cannot wait for slow decisions while Russia prepares to weaponise winter, infrastructure and civilian suffering once again.
