European Commissioner for the Mediterranean Dubravka Šuica said there are important lessons to learn from the recent migration crisis.
Speaking at the Informal Meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers — Gymnich in Druids Glen, County Wicklow, Ireland, Šuica said the immediate crisis is over, but some issues remain.
She said there are still thousands of minors present, but Morocco is ready to receive those with family links there, following contacts with both the Spanish and Moroccan ministers.
Šuica made clear that those concerned will receive help and assistance, but will not be transferred to mainland Spain. They will be accommodated locally while the process continues.
Her strongest message was that border management alone is not enough.
Šuica said Europe must invest more in partnerships, cooperation and narratives — especially because social media appeared to be one of the main triggers of the crisis.
She stressed that it is not for the Commission to investigate, and that this will be handled by intelligence and other services from Spain, Morocco and Europe.
Her warning was clear: migration crises are no longer only about borders. They are also about partnerships, information, social media, public narratives and coordinated action.
