Who is John Vervaeke beyond the professor?

John Vervaeke, Taylor Barratt, and Ethan Hsieh explore John's relationship with theory and practice.

This session was originally recorded in front of a live audience on Sunday, April 19, 2026, John Vervaeke joins Taylor Barratt and Ethan Hsieh to explore the growing gap between theory and lived experience and how to enact it through practice. Taylor and Ethan follow John through an exploration of his role as a practitioner and a facilitator. John draws on Plato’s cave cycle, Aristotle’s shift from sophia to phronesis, and modern 4E cognitive science, the conversation introduces a powerful framework: moving continuously between abstract understanding and embodied practice.

They examine:
• why propositional thinking alone leads to disconnection
• how dialectical practice and dialogos restore participatory knowing
• the role of trust, risk, and communal meaning-making
• how to avoid turning spiritual practice into self-help techniques

This episode is the first in a three-part series exploring theory-to-practice, practice-to-theory and the relationship between. If you would like to join John, Taylor and Ethan in practice, all three of them will be facilitating TIAMAT Tier 1 in Toronto this May;
