In this video I compare the standard retail way of hemming jeans vs the cutting of the flat fell seams first fold. This reduces the bulk of the seam and makes it easier for many home machines to sew over. The retail way produces a cleaner hem. However, the stitch quality may suffer enough for you to consider the cut method. See and hear the difference as I sew each leg using these methods.
I am using the Singer 9985 in the video.
NOTE! I say shorter seams on the uncut hem. I meant to say shorter stitches. This is due to the machine struggling a bit to feed the fabric when it arrived at the side seam.. Please note that the using the Singer J Foot with the leveler (or the equivalent on your machine) would help the machine sew over the hump.
