Is Nintendo finally addressing one of the biggest shortcommings that they pushed with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2? Possibly! Here is exactly what is going on behind the scenes right now. There was a brand new patent discovered and reported on that potentially will update the Nintendo Switch 2 ecosystem with a brand new universal dock. This hardware revision will intelligently allow you to go ahead and use it seamlessly with both the original Nintendo Switch, the Switch OLED, and of course, the new Switch 2.
We saw this detailed recently online when a new patent filing from China surfaced: Nintendo has officially designed a cross-generation dock that supports the use of both the original Nintendo Switch system and the powerful Switch 2. But the really brilliant part is how the dock automatically handles the massive technical differences between the two console generations. When you drop the Switch 2 into this new docked setup, the system immediately detects it and unlocks its full potential. You get the much faster USB 3 data standard, a significantly higher resolution video output optimized for 4K displays, and a higher fan RPM to actively blow cool air directly into the console to manage the more demanding hardware.
On the flip side, when you plug in your older original Switch or a Switch OLED console, the dock instantly scales things back perfectly to match the original, legacy hardware specs. You get the standard USB 2 data speeds, the traditional lower-resolution 1080p video output, and a much lower RPM on the internal cooling fan so it doesn't sound like a jet engine in your living room for absolutely no reason. When you look at the leaked line drawings and diagrams for the patent, it is functionally just a Switch dock. The airflow is designed to hit the system efficiently, but visually, it is pretty simple and extremely straightforward in its overall design. But man, this thing could be an awesome addition to our gaming setups.
I will tell you directly from my standpoint as a long-time fan and collector, this is a very long time coming and honestly, the whole situation was really stupid of Nintendo to begin with. If you genuinely want to maintain that consumer goodwill, offer seamless backwards compatibility, and actually help your existing massive install base smoothly transition over to the new generation, why on earth would you make them buy something completely different with entirely new, proprietary power requirements that split the household? The original Switch tops out around an 18-watt draw, while the new Switch 2 is rated for up to 60 watts. Families do not want to constantly swap out power cables or clutter up their TV stands with two nearly identical-looking pieces of plastic just to play their massive physical game library!
Now, third-party companies such as Aver Media have already come out with incredible firmware updates for their existing Switch 1 docks that magically allow them to work perfectly with the Nintendo Switch 2, and they work wonderfully. I absolutely love using these third-party docks myself because they actually respect the consumer's wallet and existing hardware. Why Nintendo took so long to come around to this incredibly obvious consumer-friendly solution, I really don't know. It feels like they had to wait for the aftermarket community to completely beat them to the punch before finally deciding to step up and potentially offer an official, in-house alternative.
This universal dock patent is a huge deal for families who still heavily play their Switch OLEDs alongside the new Switch 2, and it will drastically cut down on the frustrating cable clutter behind your entertainment center.
