You never know who or what you are going to encounter when wandering the floor at the Utah Retro Game Expo! As one of our absolute favorite retro gaming conventions of the entire year, the show floor is always packed with die-hard collectors, rare holy grail cartridges, and amazing community members. During this year's expo, we witnessed a massive milestone in Nintendo 64 collecting history with our good friend Kris Carlson from @KrisCarlsonYT (formerly known as the Game Dad Show). Right there on the convention floor, Kris officially acquired one of the absolute rarest, most expensive, and most elusive licensed N64 games in existence: Super Bowling!
For those unfamiliar with the high-stakes world of Nintendo 64 game collecting, Super Bowling is legendary among retro enthusiasts for all the wrong reasons. Released extremely late in the console's lifespan in 1999 by Athena and publisher Sunsoft, Super Bowling had an extraordinarily small production run and saw very limited retail distribution. Many of the few copies that were produced ended up as rental units at video rental chains like Blockbuster Video, leading to low surviving quantities in good condition today. Because of its scarcity, loose cartridges command massive prices on the secondary market. And while the actual bowling gameplay itself is notoriously mediocre at best, it stands as an absolute brick wall for anyone attempting to finish a complete N64 library.
With this monumental pickup of Super Bowling at the Utah Retro Game Expo, Kris Carlson has officially completed his full North American (NTSC-U) Nintendo 64 cartridge collection! That means all 296 officially licensed North American N64 cartridges are now cataloged, owned, and sitting on his shelves! Completing a full N64 set is an unbelievable milestone that very few game collectors ever achieve, given the massive financial hurdles of heavy hitters like ClayFighter 63 1/3 Sculptor's Cut, Stunt Racer 64, Worms Armageddon, Transformers Beast Wars Transmetals, Super Bowling, and International Track & Field 2000.
When talking with Kris about why anyone would dedicate so much time, energy, and financial resources toward hunting down every single licensed N64 title—including the notoriously terrible or ridiculously expensive ones—his answer comes down to pure nostalgia, passion, and personal history. Growing up, the Nintendo 64 was the iconic console of his childhood era. It was the system that truly defined his early love for video games, but like many kids back in the late 90s, he didn't actually own an N64 console himself. Instead, he played at friends' houses and always dreamed of owning his own setup. Now, as an adult with "adult money" and a passion for retro video game preservation, he has turned that childhood dream into a reality!
However, Kris isn't stopping at a complete 296-game North American set! His ultimate goal is to complete a full GLOBAL Nintendo 64 collection! That means hunting down every single Japanese NTSC-J exclusive release, European PAL exclusives, custom variant cartridges, and even the ultra-rare 64DD (Nintendo 64 Disk Drive) add-on hardware along with its entire physical magnetic disk library! It is an incredibly ambitious undertaking that will take his retro game collecting journey to a whole new level.
