One of the most fun retro-style racing games of all time has to be the Cruis'n series. Going back to the classic days of the arcades, the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, and even the Wii, this franchise has always been about pure, unadulterated speed and over-the-top fun. The newest entry on the original Nintendo Switch, Cruis'n Blast, perfectly captures that magic. It brings the high-octane thrills of the arcade cabinet right into your living room, complete with the neon-drenched tracks, insane jumps, and ludicrous vehicles that fans have come to love. If you enjoyed the classic titles, this is an absolute must-play experience that delivers nostalgia in spades.
Recently, however, something unfortunate happened: Cruis'n Blast was suddenly delisted from the Nintendo Switch eShop. This sudden removal is a stark reminder of why I am such a huge advocate for physical media over digital downloads. When you buy a game digitally, you are often just purchasing a license to play it, a license that can be revoked at any time. But if you own the physical cartridge, no one can ever take that away from you. You can still easily find the physical version of this incredible racing game in retail stores or online for around twenty to thirty dollars, making it a spectacular bargain.

The primary reason I firmly believe this game got delisted from the digital storefront comes down to licensing agreements. Cruis'n Blast features several officially licensed vehicles from major real-world automobile manufacturers, including Chevrolet and Nissan. In the video game industry, these car licenses are usually granted for a specific, limited number of years. Once that license expires, or if the manufacturer decides to revoke it, the developer or publisher has no choice but to completely pull the game from sale. This is a common tragedy for racing games, making the physical copy an essential preservation tool for gaming history.
For this video, we are doing something special. I actually hadn't opened my copy of the game yet; it still had the original factory wrapper on it until I started filming. We finally took it out, ripped off the plastic, and threw it right into our Nintendo Switch 2 console to see exactly how it plays today. Unsurprisingly, it looks and feels incredibly familiar, but in the best way possible. Graphically speaking, it looks exactly like I expected for a modern iteration of the franchise—very crisp, very clean, and running beautifully. The frame rate keeps up perfectly with the intense, non-stop action on the screen.
The gameplay is where it truly shines. All the crazy sorts of tricks, flips, and unbelievable stunts from the original arcade releases are completely intact. Joey Chitwood would certainly be proud of the two-wheel driving mechanics and insane barrel rolls you can pull off here. The track design is absolutely wild, featuring everything from dinosaur encounters with triceratops to dodging massive yeti hands. It is exactly what I wanted it to be: a chaotic, colorful, and unbelievably entertaining arcade racer that does not take itself too seriously. At the current physical price point, you are getting an absolute steal.
As we raced toward the finish line in our gameplay session, the competition was fierce, and we managed to secure a solid fourth-place overall finish. It was just a quick taste, but I immediately wanted to play more. If you are a fan of this legendary series or just enjoy accessible, exhilarating racing games in general, I highly recommend that you go out and track down a physical copy before they become expensive collector's items.
