I told you so. Honestly, I really wish I hadn’t been right about this one. When I mentioned I was picking up the Nintendo Switch 2 at launch last June, I caught a lot of heat. People said there weren't enough games or that it was already overpriced at $449. While I still think the library needs to grow, I was hedging my bets. Every fiber of my being told me a price increase was inevitable, and unfortunately, that day has arrived.

Following the lead of the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5, Nintendo has officially confirmed—and analysts like Geoff Keighley and reporters like Jeff Grubb (via the latest earnings reports) are backing this up—that we are seeing a $50 price increase in the U.S. starting September 1, 2026.

The Numbers: Higher Price, Lower Expectations
Nintendo dropped this news alongside their latest fiscal report, and the messaging is a bit of a mixed bag. Here is the breakdown:

New Price: The Switch 2 moves from $449.99 to $499.99 in the US.

The Window: You have roughly three and a half months (until Aug. 31) to grab the system at its original launch price.

Sales Forecast: Nintendo has actually lowered its sales expectations, predicting they will sell 3 million fewer units (dropping from nearly 20 million to 16.5 million) in the coming fiscal year.

Raising prices while lowering expectations? That’s a bold strategy. It’s not necessarily a sign that the console is a "flop," but it’s a clear indicator of the economic pressure Nintendo is under.

Why Is This Happening?
It’s the "AI Tax." The cost of RAM and flash storage is going through the roof because of the massive demand from AI data centers. Combine that with rising component costs and logistics, and Nintendo is moving to protect its margins. Unlike some competitors, Nintendo historically likes to make a profit on every piece of hardware they ship, and this move ensures they stay in the green.

The RoXolid Reality: A Tough Time for Gamers
Between the hardware hike and the recent news of "format-split" pricing (where physical games are now starting to see a $10 premium over digital), it is becoming an increasingly expensive hobby to be a Nintendo fan. If you were on the fence about the Switch 2, that $449 entry point is about to vanish.

I want to hear from you:

Are you going to rush out and grab a Switch 2 before the September 1st deadline? 🏃💨

Does a $500 price tag change your mind about the console entirely?

Did you see this coming, or did you think Nintendo would hold the line on pricing?
