As a lifelong Star Wars fan, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire for the original Nintendo 64 holds an incredibly special place in my gaming memories. Back when it launched in late 1996, this game was a massive cultural event for gamers and Star Wars enthusiasts alike. For me and many others in my generation, it felt like the very first truly new Star Wars story and media event we had gotten since Return of the Jedi hit theaters back in 1983! While I didn't read the Expanded Universe novels or comic books by authors like Steve Perry or Timothy Zahn back when they were released—something I definitely need to go back and dive into—Shadows of the Empire introduced unforgettable characters like Dash Rendar and his ship, the Outrider. It was an absolute titan of a title that wasn't just a fun 64-bit action game; it was an undisputed system seller for the Nintendo 64.
Naturally, as we continue testing out new FPGA clone hardware on the channel, I wanted to see how this legendary N64 title looks, plays, and sounds on the ModRetro M64 upscaled to pristine 4K resolution! To capture this gameplay in full 4K visual fidelity, we recorded this session using our MacBook Neo paired directly with the AVerMedia GC552 Pro capture card. Having a reliable, high-end 4K capture workflow with the AVerMedia GC552 Pro and MacBook Neo ensures that every single pixel, texture upgrade, and frame rendered by the M64 FPGA architecture is displayed as cleanly and accurately as possible for this video review.
When you boot up the game and hit that iconic opening level, the nostalgia is instant and overwhelming. The iconic Battle of Hoth stage made players feel like they were stepping directly into the shoes of Dash Rendar, piloting a Snowspeeder right in the middle of The Empire Strikes Back! From circling Imperial AT-AT walkers with harpoons and tow cables to dodging enemy fire through the icy Hoth canyons, the gameplay scale was second to none back in 1996. There are even subtle combat mechanics that make a huge difference—like targeting AT-ST "chicken walkers" directly in the center mass of their body, which deals significantly more damage than firing blasters at their armored legs!
Another aspect of Shadows of the Empire that blew us away back in the day was its rich stereo sound design. Hooking up your N64 to a great audio setup in the 90s made a world of difference. My brother had a JVC head unit paired with Pioneer speakers, and cranked up through that system, the stereo sound effects of John Williams' cinematic orchestral soundtrack, laser blasts, and engine roars sounded flat-out amazing!
For our controller setup during this test, I am using an original Nintendo 64 controller retrofitted with Retro-Bit’s Hall Effect joystick upgrade kit. Original N64 analog sticks are infamous for grinding down over time, but the Hall Effect sensors provide buttery-smooth precision, zero stick drift, and pinpoint control when aiming blasters or flying through tight spaces.
Before recording, I was actually a little apprehensive because another iconic Star Wars title—Star Wars: Rogue Squadron—currently locks up or fails to boot on the ModRetro M64 (a known compatibility issue that the hardware developers are actively working to address via future firmware updates). So seeing Shadows of the Empire run flawlessly from start to finish with crisp 4K scaling without a single crash was a total triumph!
Overall, Shadows of the Empire looks, plays, and sounds absolutely wonderful on the ModRetro M64. It is a fantastic showcase of what modern FPGA retro hardware can bring to classic 64-bit gaming setups.
