For the first time in what feels like an absolute eternity, our family is finally packing up and hitting the open road for a trip away from the house. We are traveling for our youngest daughter’s highly anticipated dance competition, and we couldn't be more excited to support her. Getting there requires a solid five-and-a-half-hour drive. Any parent knows that long road trips require top-tier entertainment, and downtime between dance routines at the hotel means we need serious gaming gear. We packed our travel gaming bag we picked up a couple of years ago from castleames.com. Let's open it up and take a comprehensive look at the ultimate portable gaming setup we brought along for this family adventure!

Keeping hardware safe is my top priority. I use the JSAUX carrying case designed specifically for the Nintendo Switch 2. I opted for this exact model not just for its rugged exterior that heavily protects the console during transit, but because it features a well-designed interior compartment that perfectly holds both original Switch cartridges and the new Switch 2 games securely. Having physical media in one secure spot is a game-changer when living out of a suitcase.

I’m not the only gamer in the family. While my main system is the Nintendo Switch 2, we brought two Nintendo Switch Lite consoles—one for my wife and one for my daughter. The Switch Lite is the perfect travel companion. It allows them to take time off from the stress of the competition, boot up relaxing puzzle games, or check on their islands in Animal Crossing to decompress and unwind after long days.

For handheld mode, I never leave home without my Raycon earbuds. They are my go-to audio choice because they work flawlessly and are exceptionally comfortable for extended gaming sessions. To maximize handheld comfort, I rock the NYXI Hyperion 3s. These attachments completely transform the handheld experience. To connect to the big hotel screen, the Pro Controller 2 is my definitive way to play docked with incredible precision.

Speaking of hotel gaming, we make it a family activity. One of the main games we brought on this trip is Nintendo Switch Sports. To make sure everyone can jump in, I packed an extra set of Joy-Cons along with the standard Joy-Con grip for multiplayer action. To power the setup, we have the official Nintendo Switch 2 power supply and a standard HDMI cable, making hotel connectivity an absolute breeze for family game nights.

As a content creator, the grind never stops. For my workstation, I am loving the MacBook Neo. It is super light, incredibly portable, and remarkably easy to take with me everywhere. To capture gameplay footage out in the field, I rely on the original Genki Shadowcast. It's tiny but mighty. Additionally, I packed our AVerMedia portable dock. I brought this specific dock because of its versatility—it functions perfectly with both the original Switch and the Switch 2. It outputs video to the TV and acts as a dedicated capture device if I decide to stream.

On the games front, alongside our digital library, I brought a physical copy of Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, complete in box. My wife actually bought this for me recently, but since I already owned it, my master plan is to swing by a local game store, exchange it, and put the credit toward the brand-new Star Fox game! Rounding out the bag, I have my smartphone, gimbal, and microphones for behind-the-scenes vlogs.

This covers my fundamental travel setup whenever we hit the road. Having a mix of handheld comfort, multiplayer hotel options, and essential content creation tools makes traveling so much more amazing and stress-free. Now, I want to hear directly from you! When you go on a trip, what does your gaming setup look like? Do you take your original Switch, your Switch Lite, or your brand-new Switch 2 with you? Do you go through the effort to connect to the hotel TV, or do you strictly stick to handheld mode? Let me know your thoughts down below in the comments!
