What color is the best for an underpainting? Why did you paint the sky last? Both questions I get asked a lot, so let's talk about them! I'm also going to show you some impressionist brushstrokes, a composition trick I like to use, all while using a limited color palette to create our impressionist landscape acrylic painting.

I’m painting on a 12x16-inch stretched canvas, but you can paint on any type and size of canvas you like.

I used:
• A pencil
• A 1/2-inch flat brush
• #8 filbert
• Matte fluid medium (optional)
All brushes available on my website here: paintingwithjane.com/brushes

I’m using Liquitex Basics acrylic paint in the following colors:
• Titanium White
• Dioxazine Purple
• Phthalocyanine Blue
• Cobalt Blue
• Cadmium Yellow Medium
I did my underpainting in
• Quinacridone Magenta, but get creative!!
But you can use any colors you like. Check out my Instagram for 3 more versions of this painting with Cadmium Red Medium, Cadmium Yellow Medium, and Cobalt Blue underpaintings to see how it affects the finished painting.
