A viewer quite rightly raised concerns about iFLYTEK, so I’ve taken some time to look into it properly.
iFLYTEK was added to the U.S. Commerce Department’s Entity List in October 2019, alongside other Chinese AI and surveillance companies. The U.S. government said those companies were implicated in human-rights abuses connected to repression, mass detention and high-technology surveillance of Uyghurs, Kazakhs and other Muslim minority groups in Xinjiang.
Human Rights Watch and Reuters have also linked iFLYTEK to voiceprint and voice-recognition systems used by Chinese police and security authorities, including in Xinjiang. iFLYTEK has said it follows international law and does not infringe privacy or human rights, and China denies the wider allegations about Xinjiang. So I do want to be fair about the fact that these claims are disputed.
I also could not find UK legislation that directly sanctions or bans iFLYTEK. However, iFLYTEK has been named in UK Parliamentary debates and written evidence as a company of concern because of its U.S. blacklist status and reported links to surveillance and human-rights abuses in Xinjiang. Some UK parliamentarians have called for a UK-style entities list that would include companies such as iFLYTEK, but that is not the same as an enacted UK ban.
For me, this is serious enough that I need to think carefully before giving the company more attention or support through my videos. It is relatively recent, it is well documented, and it relates directly to the kind of AI and voice-recognition technology the company is known for.
I’m not saying every viewer has to reach exactly the same conclusion. But I do think it would be wrong for me to ignore it. I’ll keep monitoring the situation, and I’ll be taking this into account before making any more videos featuring iFLYTEK products.
