I am officially back in my custodianship era!
In today’s video, I’m rescuing and restoring a set of early 20th-century fireplace tiles that were uncovered during a friend’s home renovation — and very nearly lost.
When they sent me a photograph of the original tiles hidden behind some boards, my heart skipped a beat. Beautiful, worn, unmistakably interwar. Likely 1920s. Cheerful greens, nature-inspired motifs, that quietly optimistic domestic style that defined so many homes between the wars.
But, unfortunately, they weren’t going to be kept. 😔
And while we always reserve judgement — because homes must first serve the needs of the people living in them — I couldn’t stop thinking about them...
Then I remembered something. 🤔
The empty tiled gap beneath my own bedroom fireplace. A space that once held tiles… but no longer does.
And just like that, a rescue mission was born. 💪
In this video I:
• Salvage and gently clean 100-year-old fireplace tiles
• Test whether they’ll fit into my own original fireplace opening
• Plan how to use the broken fragments to fill the remaining gaps
• Embrace the beauty of something worn, imperfect, and historic
They are chipped. Some are cracked. They are deeply, deeply filthy. And I love them all the more for it.
This project means a great deal to me — not because it’s perfect, but because it feels like an act of stewardship. A small way of honouring the craftsmanship and care of the past, and giving it a second life rather than letting it disappear.
The next stage will involve actual tiling (and likely the supervision of Jack and his toolkit), but for now, this is the beginning of their second chapter.
Sometimes preservation isn’t grand or dramatic. Sometimes it’s just sitting criss-cross applesauce on the floor with a bucket and a brush, trying your best.
And honestly? That’s enough.
