Mt Mitchell stands at 6,684 feet, the highest point east of the Mississippi. The 12-mile round trip from Black Mountain Campground gains 3,700 feet over well-marked trail with blue blazes. Expect switchbacks, creek crossings, and dense forest before reaching the summit tower. The hike is strenuous but manageable for prepared hikers. Parking is free at South Toe Trailhead.
