Running low on food or crafting supplies in Project Zomboid Build 42?
You may be walking straight past free resources.
In this tutorial I'll show you how to forage in Project Zomboid using Search Mode, allowing you to find useful supplies hidden throughout forests, fields, roadsides, and other areas.
To begin foraging:
Click the Magnifying Glass on the left side of the screen
↓
Open Investigate Area
↓
Enable Search Mode
Once activated, the world outside your immediate search radius becomes greyed out as your character focuses on searching the nearby ground.
Then start walking.
I recommend moving slowly through the area in a zig-zag pattern like you're searching a parking lot for lost car keys.
As you get close to something interesting, indicators begin pointing you toward it. Once your character gets close enough to identify the object, you gain Foraging XP, even if you decide not to pick it up.
Foraging can uncover all kinds of useful supplies, including:
🌿 Sticks and plant materials
🪨 Stones and crafting resources
🐛 Bugs for fishing bait
🍓 Wild food
🌱 Seeds and plants
🍄 Mushrooms
🌿 Herbs
🐾 Signs of nearby wildlife
🎒 Other useful objects
You can also select a Search Focus to prioritize certain categories of items while still being able to discover other things around you.
Search in forests and fields for the best wilderness resources, but don't ignore other environments. What you can discover depends heavily on the type of area you're exploring.
Foraging is also incredibly easy to level because simply identifying discoveries gives you experience. You don't need to fill your backpack with every stick, bug, and questionable mushroom you find.
⚠️ WATCH FOR ZOMBIES
Search Mode limits your effective search view, but it does NOT make you blind to zombies.
You can still see and hear threats approaching, and Search Mode will drop out under certain combat or sprinting conditions.
Don't rely on that to protect you.
There are still plenty of zombies wandering through fields and forests, so periodically stop searching and check your surroundings.
