I tested four bear-resistant containers to see how much food actually fits and how much pack space they take. The BearVault BV450 and BV500, Ursack AllMitey 10L, and Grubcan all have official capacities, but real-world packing is different. I loaded each with typical backpacking food for multi-day trips, then fit them into my pack to show the volume trade-offs. If you're trying to decide between a hard-sided canister and a soft Ursack, or figuring out whether the BV450 is enough for a weekend versus needing the BV500 for a week, this comparison shows what fits and what doesn't.
