Here's the test: when you're raking product through, you should be able to feel it.
Not slippery. Not dripping. But different than your bare hair. A little grip, a little squishy. That's the signal.
If you can't feel it in your hair, you don't have enough.
The goal is smooth and define. Smooth gets all the hairs grouped and frizz smoothed out. Define is whatever you do to encourage the curl to form.
You can't skip step one and expect step two to work.
