Architect Julien Sebban, founder of the Paris-based studio Uchronia, welcomes Open House viewers into his vibrant home located in the 18th arrondissement. Blending bold color, sculptural form, and a spirit of joyful experimentation, the apartment captures Sebban’s distinctive design philosophy...one where architecture becomes an expression of optimism and imagination.
Visitors first arrive through a lush garden courtyard, where wavy red wrought-iron seating and a yellow fiberglass hand-shaped chair set a playful tone. Inside, the open-plan layout departs from the traditional Haussmannian style, taking full advantage of the home’s industrial origins. At the entrance, a sculptural peanut-shaped mirror finished in gold leaf pairs with a matching bench, combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
The main living area seamlessly combines the kitchen, dining, and living room. The kitchen, finished in brown resin with subtle sparkle, features stainless steel surfaces and custom ceramic tilework designed in collaboration with friends. Silver-leafed wooden columns add a reflective shimmer, while Sebban’s use of glossy materials enhances light and depth. At the heart of the home, the dining table, designed by Uchronia, is crafted from Van Gogh onyx, its swirling greens and oranges paired with silk-upholstered Frankl chairs. Above, a sculptural blue flower-like chandelier anchors the room. The adjoining living room continues Sebban’s chromatic narrative with a generously scaled sofa, a signature “cookie” table that fades from orange to purple, and walls accented with mirror mosaics and bronze lighting.
The apartment’s personality particularly shines through in unexpected details: translucent pink-and-blue curtains that filter light like stained glass, a paper-like indoor garden with gold-leaf stars and a bronze shooting star lamp, and patchwork curtains inspired by Japanese textiles that create a sense of discovery between rooms. Meanwhile, the primary bedroom, wrapped in soft beige tones and accented with a bold Versailles-inspired curtain, offers plenty of serenity. A bed adorned in silk and a swirling green coverlet helps anchor the space; and in the bathroom, smooth pink concrete, sculpted custom sinks and mirrors, and marble inlays showcase Sebban’s commitment to craftsmanship and playful form.
