In this Open House tour: Interior designer Theodora Esparza, founder and creative director of Studio Stilo, presents a Steinkamp residence in Los Angeles, a Spanish Colonial Revival home that retains the character of its 1930s origins. Built by a developer active through the mid twentieth century, the house reflects a consistent attention to detail, from its plasterwork to its stained glass.
The living room is defined by leaded glass windows with colored shields that shift the quality of light across the day. Overhead, crown molding and exposed beams emphasize the craftsmanship of the plaster ceiling, while a sculptural fireplace with relief tile anchors the space. A deep brown palette establishes the foundation for the interiors, extending into furnishings that include a Maralunga sofa by Cassina and a Siesta chair, whose bentwood frame brings a sense of lightness.
In the dining room, patinated woods and softer tones introduce contrast. A table sourced from a ship’s galley shows wear along its base, marking years of use, and is paired with vintage seating. Copper wall sconces add warmth and a subtle green patina that carries color between rooms.
The breakfast nook shifts in tone, where a stepped plaster ceiling enhances the sense of height and blue upholstery with yellow piping brings a brighter, more relaxed atmosphere. In the primary bedroom, a rare plaster detail reminiscent of piped frosting adds dimension to the walls.
