In this Open House Sail 4th 250 special, Commander José Eduardo de Sousa Luís and welcomes viewers aboard the Portuguese Navy tall ship Navio Escola Sagres: a historic vessel launched that was launched in Hamburg, Germany in 1937. Measuring 89 meters in length with a towering mast height of 46 meters, the ship carries 155 crew members and serves as a training platform and floating ambassador of Portuguese maritime culture.
The tour begins atop the Castello, a vantage point that provides sweeping views of all three masts and the ship’s 23 sails (which include 10 square sails, marked with the cross of Christ, and 13 Latin sails that capture centuries of sailing tradition in motion). This area also features two bells that are reserved for emergencies, as well as ceremonial artillery that capture the ship’s disciplined heritage.
Down below, the galley illustrates the scale of life at sea. This includes producing up to 500 meals a day for a crew of 160 with just five dedicated cooks aboard. The PU serves as the central gathering area, a space of light and movement where sailors converge. The bridge, outfitted with three helm wheels and a traditional engine telegraph, emphasizes both collaboration and precision when the ship is under sail. A Portuguese Navy motto displayed onboard reminds all aboard that honor and dedication are always rewarded.
The commander’s office and dining cabin blend functional leadership with ceremonial tradition. These rooms host ambassadors, presidents, and royalty, connecting the ship’s operational life with its diplomatic mission. Offerings from cities, military units, and visiting ships decorate the walls, reflecting international bonds and centuries of seafaring culture. The Sagres has participated in prestigious maritime events such as the 2025 Sail Amsterdam, where it sailed alongside hundreds of vessels, reinforcing its role as a living emblem of Portuguese naval heritage.
