On 29 March 1967, ITN's Sandy Gall sent a special documentary from South Vietnam reporting on civilian refugees and casualties of the country's brutal civil war. The report followed nine New Zealander and two British medics volunteering in Binh Dinh Province, where a refugee shanty town was established in the provincial capital, Qui Nhon, amid the massive civilian displacement caused by the ongoing conflict. Gall witnessed a Kiwi surgeon treating a child with a gunshot wound and caring for a suspected Viet Cong soldier, as well as a Save the Children-funded clinic which looked after severely injured young Vietnamese people.
At this stage of the Vietnam War, the US continued to expand its war efforts (which would reach their peak the following year); President Lyndon B. Johnson wrote to Ho Chi Minh to propose a ceasefire in the conflict; Robert McNamara claimed that the bombing of North Vietnam was working; and Robert F Kennedy had already outlined a three-point plan to end the war.
The Vietnam War would last another eight years. The total casualty count would climb into the millions.
