A 74-year-old stroke survivor heard someone outside his home, looked out, and saw a man trying to break in through his window.
Police say that man was 57-year-old Cedric Ford. Before Ford could get inside, Mr. Donald Bolin fired one shot and hit him in the chest.
That is exactly why the Second Amendment matters.
Because when people argue about gun laws, they always picture the same kind of person: able-bodied, young, strong, fast, and capable of fighting someone off with their bare hands.
But that is not the real world.
There are older people.
Disabled people.
People recovering from strokes.
People living alone.
People who cannot run, cannot fight, and are not winning a physical confrontation with the person climbing through their window.
That gap is why the firearm exists.
The gun closed it.
And I already know somebody is going to say the suspect was not armed. But when someone is prying open your window while you are inside your own home, you do not get the luxury of waiting to find out what he plans to do once he gets in.
A person willing to break into an occupied house has already crossed the line.
But this story gets even crazier.
After Ford was shot, police say he and his girlfriend drove to a gas station, called 911, and claimed they were victims of a drive-by shooting.
Think about what that means.
The story they allegedly tried to put on the table was that some random person in Gastonia shot this man for no reason.
And if the camera system and gunshot detection network had not helped police trace what actually happened, where would that leave the 74-year-old homeowner?
That is the part people miss.
The fight does not end when the shooting stops.
Sometimes the next fight is someone else telling a completely different story about what happened to you in your own home, and you standing there hoping the evidence catches up before the accusation does.
Mr. Bolin was supposed to be the easy target.
Instead, he survived.
And the people police say picked him are the ones facing charges.
