A road rage incident in Charleston, West Virginia ended with one man dead after he allegedly made a U-turn, came back, got out of his vehicle, approached another driver, and struck him multiple times.
The part that matters most?
The other driver had already pulled over to avoid the confrontation.
That is the move everybody tells you to make.
Don’t engage.
Don’t escalate.
Don’t race him.
Don’t brake check him.
Just get off the road and let him go.
And according to investigators, that’s exactly what the armed driver tried to do.
But the road rager came back.
That U-turn changed everything.
Because once you turn around, come back, get out, close distance, and start hitting a stranger on the side of the road, you are not trying to avoid a fight anymore.
You are bringing the fight to him.
And at that point, the person who tried to leave may be forced into a decision he never wanted to make.
One round was fired.
The threat stopped.
And now the legal system has to decide what name to put on it.
Homicide does not automatically mean murder.
It means one human being killed another human being.
That is the starting point.
The real question is whether the shooting was justified.
Could the shooter have left?
Did he reasonably fear death or serious bodily injury?
Was the threat still active?
Those are the questions prosecutors have to answer.
But from a self-defense perspective, this case is a brutal reminder that “just drive away” only works when the other person lets you.
You can de-escalate.
You can pull over.
You can hand the other guy the entire road.
But if he turns around and brings the fight back to you, every good decision you made collapses into the reality of what’s within arm’s reach.
Be the person willing to let stupid stay stupid.
Take the exit.
Let him win the imaginary road rage contest.
But carry anyway.
Because the other guy gets a vote.
