Congaree National Park protects one of the last old-growth bottomland hardwood forests in the Southeast. The 2.4-mile Boardwalk Loop is the main trail, accessible year-round and flat enough for most visitors. You'll walk among champion trees, bald cypresses, and thick canopy that make the forest feel primeval. The park floods seasonally, so check water levels before visiting. Summer brings heat, humidity, and mosquitoes. Spring and fall offer better conditions. No permits required. This is not a dramatic landscape park, but if you slow down and look closely, the scale and age of the forest are worth the stop.
