"Heart Full of Soul", recorded by English rock group the Yardbirds in 1965, reached the #9 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the United States. The Yardbirds were originally a blues band but decided to make a shift in their musical direction into pop. This did not set well with their lead guitarist Eric Clapton who departed and went on to a great career. The Yardbirds initially tried to incorporate a sitar instrument riff in the song, but that didn't work out. A fuzz box distortion unit with and electric guitar was used to achieve the results they needed. The band also broadened their range by pioneering psychedelic rock and early hard rock, and contributed to many electric guitar innovations. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, were included in Rolling Stone's list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time", and ranked #37 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock.
