In Hate Floats, Hank and Dean are resurrected just in time to celebrate their fifteenth- I mean SIXTEENTH birthdays! Meaning it's time for Hank to drive and Dean to get his first jumpsuit! But The Monarch's back in action, and heaven help whoever gets in his way of reuniting with his beloved Doctor Girlfriend. After how plot-heavy the last episode was, this is a return to a more comedy-centric story. Mostly elaborating on what was suggested in Are You There God, It's Me Dean, that the whole hero and villain operation is done more for theatrics than any real world application. As seen when Venture takes Dean to get a trademark outfit similar to his, to the confusion of the clothes store manager and the disappointment of his son. Who's even nearly killed by wearing it. And when Monarch decides to get back in the game, where his only returning minions Henchmen 21 and 24 try to help by recruiting thugs downtown. Something that VERY quickly blows up in their face, as these street toughs aren't interested in following any predefined rules set by some guild that allegedly holds no real power in the real world. Or a whiny boss who tries to fire them for not following said rules. We also see more of the love triangle between The Monarch, Phantom Limb, and Doctor Girlfriend, who all just so happen to be shopping at the same mall the Ventures are at, and where Doctor Girlfriend is having second thoughts about dating her first ex again. But not enough to still not be pissed at Monarch when he finds her in the food court and pitifully begs her to come back to him. All while also trying to communicate with his henchmen, where, of course, trying to talk to one person just ends up confusing the other. Yeah, there's a right way and a wrong way to do this gag, and this is the wrong, incredibly cringeworthy way to do it. This episode also features the most development and screentime for Phantom Limb he's gotten to this point, where it's confirmed he's the high-society snob his last few appearances suggested, more concerned with getting the right cutlery than what his girlfriend wants. But who's still willing to work with his enemy Brock if it means rescuing her from the desperate Monarch. Giving us a pretty sweet arc where Brock is at first not happy about being quote unquote rescued by the villain, but has to admit the guy's alright. We also get more looks into the personal lives of Henchmen 21 and 24, including their home lives and Gary's intensive nerd collections. And most importantly, Doctor Girlfriend teaming with Hank and Dean to rescue their father from the Monarch, revealing so much information about Doctor Venture to the boys who have only just met her, that they wonder if she's actually their mom. Beginning their series-long search for their genetic birth mother. Yeah, this episode was a lot of fun, giving us some good laughs while further developing the world. Especially the world these heroes and villains inhabit, that they insist is separate from what would be considered the real world. And that, yes, Hank and Dean do lose time when they're resurrected. Also, Doctor Girlfriend's deep voice is even recognized as being odd in this universe, with Brock not convinced she's not hiding something.
